American host cuts off Iranian press agency ISNA

Reporters Without Borders said it suspected a political motive after US web host The Planet terminated its contract with the Iranian Student's News Agency (ISNA) on 14 January 2005. The worldwide press freedom organisation has written to the US company seeking an explanation for its unilateral decision. It pointed out that a host cannot interrupt its client's service unless it has evidently broken a clause in the contract or if the contract has expired. Even in the event of a contractual dispute, a technical provider must give reasons for its decision. It does not have the competence to decide whether or not an online publication should be banned. This is the province of a judge, it said in the letter. Iranian Internet-users already suffer relentless government censorship, so it is all the more important for American host companies to show their respect for free expression, it added. The ISNA is an official press agency that nevertheless provides an important source of information, particularly for foreign organisations and media, on the arrests of journalists and political dissidents in Iran, it said. The agency regularly relays information from human rights organisations, even though it does not give its sources. In the email notifying ISNA that it was terminating the contract, The Planet said its decision was non negotiable and gave the agency 48 hours to find a new provider. Contacted by phone by Reporters Without Borders, The Planet refused to comment. The deputy technical director of ISNA described the host's action as a "violation of international law". The agency confirmed that it had changed its host following the notification from The Planet.

US 'Terminates' Iranian Website

BBC: "Iran has accused the US government of ordering an American internet service provider to stop hosting the website of an official Iranian news agency. The Iranian Student News Agency said no explanation had been given by the server, called The Planet, for its abrupt move to terminate the contract. Isna, which is widely read in Iran, says it has moved to another server, which it did not name. The Planet was unable to comment immediately on the allegations. The row has led to calls for Iran to develop its own satellite technology. Isna said it had received an e-mail from The Planet warning that the website would be terminated within 48 hours and that the decision was final and non-negotiable."

The Planet Causing More Issues

According to some news I read yesterday, The Planet is hardly moving forward blocking Iranian servers. I discussed once with them this long time ago and they actually didn't have any problem with Iranians but now... This pressure from USA on Iranians is far from 'unfair'. Google, eBay, PayPal and now... ThePlanet! Who will be the next?

The Very First Experience of Broadband Connection!

After all and all looking for broadband connection with a reasonable price here in Tehran, I had some experience in Kish island before, I got an IP Wireless Service from DATAK company yesterday. They charged me 50$ per a month for 128/32 connection. Although it is 128k, I have got for some hours around 45KBps which reminds me of 512kbps. As it has been announced on their website, it uses Radio Frequency between 2.5 - 23 GHz. The CPE is connected to your Ethernet card using a cross cable and the service till now has been so far so good! Here you can see my CPE in front of my window beside my laptop.

Amiga is Alive!

This may be irrelevant to about 99.9% of you, but Ars Technica has an in-depth analysis of the Micro-AmigaOne and the Amiga OS4 operating system. Amiga, you say? Didn’t that platform disappear around the same time asteroids were obliterating the dinosaurs? Well, sort of. Like many a failed-but-elegant system (OS/2 Warp, anyone?), the Amiga has been kept alive by devoted fans through years of ownership changes, bankruptcies and false starts. According to Ars Technica’s review, the platform is remarkably up-to-date and includes handy features like an Internet connection wizard, a Winamp clone to play MP3s, and a Photoshop knockoff. Pretty slick if you’re an Amiga fan, but we won’t be happy until someone releases an updated version of the Apple Lisa. Via Engadget.

Memsen Wireless File Sharing Flash Drives

GIZMODO: "Memsen was showing prototypes of their new 'Click 'n' Share' flash memory drives at CES. The concept is simple, but potentially powerful: each flash drive has (presumably) a 'shared' folder, and when two flash drives are within range, just a simple button press will wirelessly transfer the contents of those shared folders. It's only at the point of reference design for now, but Memsen is planning on licensing the idea to other vendors for production soon. I still want to beam songs from iPod to iPod (or even better, iPod to Any Other Storage Drive)."

FolderShare

FolderShare is a website and software application that allows you to create a personal Peer-to-Peer network. Use FolderShare to retrieve/update documents or to share your files (photos, reports, etc.) with family, friends, and colleagues. A FolderShare Library is the center of this personal P2P network. Run FolderShare on multiple personal computers (like your home and office machines) and you will have a powerful file system at your disposal. FolderShare can automatically create an identical set of files on all of your computers. Make a file at home and it will instantly be copied to your office computer. Edit a file on your laptop and your office computer will automatically update its version of the file. If you are on the road, use FolderShare to view and download files from your office computer via any web browser. Expand your P2P network by turning your FolderShare library into a group library. Create a Library with invited friends/colleagues and build a collection of files (documents, photos, etc.) that everyone in the group can access. Securely share as many files as you desire because FolderShare has no file size limitations or bandwidth quotas. Via Kirk Haselden.
