Reuters: 400 Dead

TEHRAN (Reuters) - A strong earthquake hit southeast Iran on Tuesday, killing almost 400 people, injuring hundreds and destroying villages, a local official told Reuters. The quake, which measured 6.4 on the Richter scale, was centered on the town of Zarand in Kerman province, about 440 miles southeast of Tehran. While villages were razed, major settlements in the area appeared to have escaped heavy damage so the toll would not be as high as the many thousands killed in some past quakes in Iran of a similar strength, officials said. "Figures we have show that in the early hours more than 1,000 were injured and almost 400 killed," said Ali Komsari, a spokesman for the Kerman provincial governor's office.

CNN: 80 Dead, 300 Hurt in Iranian Quake

(CNN) -- Eighty people have died and 300 were injured when a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near Zarand in central Iran, Iranian state-run television reported.

IRNA Confirmed... 30 Died

IRNA, Iran News Agency, has reported death of 30 people in today's earthquake. Stay tuned for more...

30 Dead, 500 Hurt in Quake

CNN: Thirty people have died and 500 were injured when a magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck near Zarand in central Iran, Iranian state-run television reported. The network reported the quake, which struck about 5:55 a.m. local time (9:25 p.m. Monday ET), sent worried residents pouring into the streets. Rescue crews were en route to Zarand. Zarand's governor told state-run television there was no major damage in the town itself, but estimated there was 30 to 35 percent destruction in outlying villages. Damage was reported in the city of Ravar, however, the network reported.Electricity was among services affected by the quake. The town, about 740 kilometers (460 miles) southeast of Tehran, is about 125 miles from Bam, where a 6.6-magnitude quake on December 26, 2003, killed more than 30,000 people, injured another 30,000 and destroyed 85 percent of buildings. A magnitude 6.4 is classified as a "strong" earthquake by the U.S. Geological Service.

Earthquake in Iran... No damage reported yet

BBC: An earthquake has damaged several villages in south-eastern Iran, state television has reported. Casualties have been reported in the wake of tremor, which had a magnitude of 6.4, the broadcaster said. The epicentre was near the city of Zarand in Kerman province. The provincial governor had no details about the victims or their injuries. As many as 30,000 people were killed when a powerful earthquake levelled Iran's historic city of Bam in 2003. Rescue teams are reportedly on the way to the villages affected by Tuesday morning's earthquake, which struck at about 0555 local time (0225GMT).

Windows Safer than Linux!?

Mike Nash, Microsoft’s top security guru said in an online chat session yesterday that Microsoft was “making progress on security using any reasonable metric."and compared Window’s flaws to those in Red Hat and SuSE. “Even with the relatively large number of bulletins we released this week, we compare favorably," he said. "Year-to-date for 2005, Microsoft has fixed 15 vulnerabilities affecting Windows Server 2003. In the same time period, for just this year, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 3 users have had to patch 34 vulnerabilities and SuSE Enterprise Linux 9 users have had to patch over 78 vulnerabilities." Iran Gripped by Wintry Weather

BBC: "Heavy snow has disrupted ordinary life in the Iranian capital, Tehran, with schools closed for most of the week and many people unable to get to work. Roads to the north and west of the country have been closed, leaving some villages in the mountains cut off. More than 70 flights were cancelled on Tuesday alone, and many others have been delayed. One newspaper says it is the worst weather for 34 years, and the forecast is for more snow in the coming days. In the capital, Tehran, 10,000 bulldozers and 13,000 municipal workers have been deployed to keep the main roads open - but many small lanes are still blocked. Public transport has been badly disrupted with long queues for buses and quarrels between the public and taxi drivers who have been increasing their fares. Children who have been off school all week have been building snow men and playing snowballs, while young boys are making money by shovelling the snow off people's roofs and driveways. All this comes as the authorities are planning a rally in Tehran for Thursday to mark the anniversary of the Islamic revolution. This year they are hoping for a massive turnout to counter American allegations that the Iranian regime oppresses its own people and has no popular support. But the weather does not seem to be on their side."

Everything You Need to Know About Writing Successfully: in Ten Minutes

Stephen King: "THAT'S RIGHT. I know it sounds like an ad for some sleazy writers' school, but I really am going to tell you everything you need to pursue a successful and financially rewarding career writing fiction, and I really am going to do it in ten minutes, which is exactly how long it took me to learn. It will actually take you twenty minutes or so to read this essay, however, because I have to tell you a story, and then I have to write a second introduction. But these, I argue, should not count in the ten minutes." Via Brad.

Solve Equations with MSN Search Engine!

Someone replied back yesterday on C9 informing us of MSN Search engine that can solve the linear equations with the results in real numbers. Just try http://search.msn.com/results.aspx?q=x%2B2%3D0&FORM=QBHP. See it returns! x+2=0 --> x=-2 !

Solve Linear System of Equations

I was reading posts on C9 today and faced a question on how to solve mathematical equations. Usually most of mathematical equations are in linear form and if they won't be, you can, most of the time, convert them to linear forms using proper functions and operators. One of the easiest ways for solving linear systems is using a method called SOR, Successive Overrelaxation Method. You can read on about it on Math World.
